After much toing and froing, winter has made itself at home in my corner of Canoe Country. A chill norther has dusted the forest floor with snow, and this time it looks like it’s here to stay. The now-silent woods await the coming storm.

I’ve been fond of firs for a long time. And a fir is never more beautiful than when frosted with new-fallen snow and backlit by a strengthening sun.

After several probing attacks, winter is now in retreat, much to the dismay of the heavy brigade, whose snowmobiles sit idle in driveways up and down the North Country. Others, however, have good reason to rejoice. Take the residents in this backcountry community, for example. With their home waters still ice-free, they can come and go unhindered. I doubt they’re complaining.
