Bike Sunday for July 18, 2010
Every Second Counts

This year’s Tour de France still has a week to go, and if you’re following the race, you know how exciting the stages have been. The Tour is a celebration of muscle power, endurance, and the ability to overcome pain. And in every bike race, every second counts.

Quest for Speed

We love our bikes, right? And we never tire of looking at them. At least I don’t, and if I’m to judge from what others tell me, I’m not alone. So each Sunday I’ll publish a bike-related picture. Most of the time it will be a photo, but don’t be surprised if a few drawings and paintings get added to the mix from time to time. I might even include a sculpture or two. (OK. A photo of a sculpture.) Anything, in short, that evokes the world on two wheels. And don’t be shy. If you have a picture you’d like to share, just email it to me. I’ll do the rest.

Leopard On Board!

You never know who will hitch a ride when you go cycling. Will a banana satisfy the hunger of a leopard? This fellow hasn’t made that clear yet, but he’s friendly enough, and he waves to all passersby from his commanding seat.

Riding a Dahon Mu to the Outer Banks

Although Pat McKay and his wife own a stableful of bikes, from a Surly LHT to classic steel roadies to a tandem, when he had to choose only one to pack for a family vacation to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, it was no contest. His Dahon Mu P24 won the toss. Folding bikes simply fit into the car more easily, particularly when it’s stuffed with holiday baggage. Pat shot this photo at sunrise with his LG VX11000 cell phone, proving that you don’t need an expensive DSLR to capture a great picture. Thanks for sharing a bit of your vacation with the rest of us, Pat!
