Earlier this week, frequent contributer Pat McKay took advantage of some unusually warm weather to cycle along the tidal Pocomoke River, a tributary of the Great Cypress Swamp. He found a stunning panorama, in which ranks of cypress knees stand sentry over a waterscape enriched by warm autumn colors. Moments like this don’t last long, but because Pat always has his camera with him, he was able to seize the day, capturing the striking scene to remind him of more clement times when the snows of winter blanket the land. And thanks to his foresight and generosity, we can enjoy the moment, too.

The land is under siege again. General Winter’s vanguard advances a little further each day, reminding everyone that the main force isn’t far behind. The warm, still days of summer are only memories, the wavering Vs of southbound geese have vanished from the skies, and chill fingers of ice are extending outwards from each bay. Darkness now outlasts daylight, and the cheerless November sun does little to warm a weary paddler’s stiffening limbs. The wild world pauses between seasons, as if to take a breath. Soon deep snow will blanket the dark woods, opening up limitless avenues for any skier or snowshoer keen to leave the beaten track. But that lies in the future.
