Photo Finish for May 21, 2010: A Back Road Still Life
by Anthony T. Jancek

Even in populous New York state, you can find sparsely settled places. Some Adirondack hamlets and crossroads are almost Appalachian in their character. Last weekend, photographer Tony Jancek took an exploratory drive along some remote back roads, on the lookout for subjects. When he stopped to snap this picture, however, he found himself facing a man with a shotgun. For a moment he thought he’d wandered onto the set of Deliverance, but things ended amicably enough. Tony got his shot—and without getting shot in the process. It was worth it.
