Crasher on the Bike:
An Unexpected Guest at the Lunch Stop

He’s been showing up everywhere. First he popped up in Melissa Brandts’ photo of her and her husband at Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park. From there he found his way into photos all across the web. Who am I talking about? Crasher the Columbian ground squirrel. I first heard about him this morning when listening to “The Six O’Clock News” on BBC Radio 4. The news reader described how The Sun had a photo of Crasher on the moon. Of course I had to go check it out myself. After an amusing interlude while drinking my morning coffee, I turned to more serious things—taking a bike ride before it got too hot. It was a hilly, sweaty ride, and I looked forward to a couple juicy apples in the shade halfway along the route. You can imagine my surprise when I opened my handlebar bag and found Crasher inside. After his trip to the moon he was glad to be here, Outside, Up North!
